ISLAND ROUTE

Product Strategy · UX Writing · Go-to-Market

Helping turn a locally rooted travel concept into a product travelers could quickly understand, trust and use.

IMPACT

Crafted the product language, positioning and customer journey that helped turn Island Route from a pre-launch concept into a coherent, market-ready travel experience.

TURNING LOCAL KNOWLEDGE INTO EMERGING TRAVEL INFRASTRUCTURE

As Mauritius grew as an international travel destination, visitors had increasing access to hotels, transport and attractions, but far less infrastructure for accessing the knowledge that makes a place intelligible: local stories, recommendations, cultural context and practical wisdom usually shared person to person.

Island Route was conceived to close that gap. Through self-guided routes, audio storytelling and curated discovery, the product aimed to give travelers greater independence while creating a digital channel for the perspectives and knowledge of people who understood the island.

The founder hired me during the pre-launch phase to help bring the app to market through UX and product strategy. I worked across copy, product and service design to clarify the proposition, sharpen the experience and create a stronger connection between what Island Route wanted to stand for and what a traveler would actually encounter in the user journey.

SHAPING THE TRAVELER EXPERIENCE

I worked across the core journey—from first encounter and onboarding through account creation, route discovery, purchase and exploration—writing and refining copy throughout the app while using language as a product-design tool rather than a finishing layer.

The work translated a relatively complex service into clearer customer outcomes: choose how you want to explore, understand where you are going and access stories and places you might otherwise miss. I refined information hierarchy, calls to action and feature language while continually testing them against the broader service experience.

Working through the language also surfaced product questions: where travelers needed reassurance, when local context mattered more than functional instruction, what needed to be understood before purchase and what could emerge through use. Resolving those questions helped make the overall journey more coherent.

ALIGNING PRODUCT, VALUE AND GO TO MARKET

As launch approached, my role expanded from individual flows into how the product communicated value as a whole. I helped shape how tours and bundles were positioned, how pricing and savings were communicated and how the proposition translated from the app into the landing experience.

The goal was continuity between the promise that attracted a traveler, the product they encountered and the value that gave them confidence to purchase and explore. That sharpened the go-to-market story as well: rather than leading with functionality, Island Route could articulate a more meaningful proposition—a self-guided way to experience Mauritius independently while staying connected to local knowledge and perspective.

My role sat across product, design and marketing, helping resolve those decisions into one coherent customer-facing system before launch.

FROM PRE-LAUNCH TO LANDING

By launch, the proposition, interface, commercial model and market story needed to reinforce one another.

I helped connect service design, UX language, product framing and go-to-market positioning across the customer journey, so onboarding, tour discovery, bundles, purchase flows and the landing experience became different expressions of the same underlying product idea.

The work reinforced a principle I carry into launches: go-to-market readiness begins and ends with product readiness. A product is not ready simply because its functionality works — it’s ready when customers understand its value, can navigate the experience confidently and see why it deserves a place in their lives.

My contribution was helping the founder get Island Route to that point—moving a locally rooted travel concept from pre-launch ambiguity into a clearer consumer product ready to provide value where it matters most.
